Individual Grants
The African American Educational Alliance and Research Foundation awards grants and scholarships throughout the year to students who share AAEA values. We look for grantees who show vision, leadership, creative problem solving, community involvement and whose efforts will lead to lasting social change. The vast majority of our grants are awarded to individuals that we approach directly, but we do list some opportunities below.
Dress for Success Grant
(race is not a factor in who gets selected)
This is a grant we will give at least two but up to four students (2 males and 2 females) who are graduating from a Patrick Henry College program a single one-time grant of up to $1,595 to be used for a custom-made suit from Knots Standard. There are no ethnic background requirements for this award.
Qualifications
The student must have participated in a total of 10 speech competitive events (in high-school or college), in any category, at the time of their application and will have competed in a total of 30 competitive events (in college only) any category, during college career.
Eligibility
Only current juniors and seniors (in good academic standing at the time of their application) are permitted to apply. The award will be forwarded to the college with explicit instructions that the student may only receive the award if they (a) graduate and (b) compete in a total of 30 competitive events during their college career.
Remember
All recordings should be prepared in accordance with the latest national debate-speech tournament rules unless those rules disagree with these guidelines.
Guidelines
(a) All submissions must be recorded in a PHC college facility and have any full time staff member present as a witness during the entire recording; the date and time of the recording must appear on the screen at all times; (b) all submission must deal with any topic related to fashion; (c) all submissions must be accompanied by a hard copy verification from the Provost of the college (or their designee) that the student is (1) in good academic standing, (2) has competed in the necessary high-school/college events to qualify for the grant, and (3) at the time of the recording the presentation had never been “judged” by the current Chairman, CEO, COO, CFO, President, Vice-President or any Board member of the African American Educational Alliance and Research Foundation.; (d) the submission must be “raw” no video-editing, save a closing title screen which must appear on the screen for 1 full minute after the performance. The screen must contain the following the names of the applicants, their school emails, their personal emails, their personal phone numbers, the witness’s name, email and phone.
Submission criteria
All students must submit a non-judged video tape in only 1 of the following categories (a) original oratory, (b) original spoken word poetry, (c) informative speaking, (d) dramatic interpretation, (e) duo interpretation, (f) humorous interpretation, (g) prose, or (h) storytelling. All individuals appearing in the recording must also be current applicants for the scholarship. Please remember that the video you submit must not contain a presentation that has been judged at any competitive event by a member of the AAEA. Submissions are open starting January 1st at 1:00AM and close March 31, 2023 at 11:59:00PM. Submissions should be sent to: accounting@africanamericanfoundation.org.
